🔹Title: EVOLUTION OR REVOLUTION? WHICH PATH SHOULD WE TAKE FOR 6G?
🔹Abstract: Forty-three years have passed since the initiation of the world's first wireless phone service in 1979. Since then, wireless communication technology has undergone a remarkable evolution, progressing from 1G to 5G. This journey has involved transitions from analog to digital and from FDMA to CDMA to OFDM.
Up until 4G, the primary objective was to achieve faster transmission with low latency and high quality, enabling speeds of up to 1Gbps today. With the advent of 5G, wireless communication has expanded its role to support new vertical services such as smart factories. Notably, research on 6G has been actively pursued since 2020 across various research institutes, companies, and academia. The aim is to commercialize 6G around 2030.
In this lecture, I will explore whether the evolution-based approach, similar to the progression from 1G to 5G, is suitable for the new services of 6G, or if a revolutionary approach is required. Specifically, I will introduce various potential core technologies for realizing 6G services, including meta-devices, biological networks, and brain communications. This exploration will provide insights into the exciting possibilities and challenges that lie ahead in the era of 6G.
