- Title: Liquid Metal Electronics and Wireless Biomedical Devices
- Abstract: Liquid metal is a metal that is in liquid phase at room temperature. Unlike toxic mercury, gallium-based alloys are biocompatible liquid metal. There are many unique applications possible due to its metallic yet stretchable and infinitely deformable properties. In this talk, recent developments of various platforms for gallium-based liquid metal alloys and its applications to RF and microwave including metasurfaces will be presented. In addition, wireless biomedical devices developed at Baylor will be presented. Examples of the micro devices include a battery-less wireless pressure sensor for intraocular pressure sensing application, a wireless micro neurostimulator for chronic pain management, a micro pump and implantable pressure sensor for bone growth using bone intramedullary fluid modulation.
- Short bio: Dr. Jeong Bong (JB) Lee received the PhD degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech in 1997. He is currently Department Chair and Full Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Baylor University. He is the also director of the Micro/Nano Devices and Systems Laboratory. His current research interests include liquid metals, MEMS and biomedical devices. Dr. Lee was a recipient of the US National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2001. Dr. Lee published more than 270 papers in journal/conference and have more than 5,900 citations. Dr. Lee has served as a TPC Chair for the IEEE Sensors Conference in 2022 and 2023. He is an associate editor for the IEEE Sensors Journal, General Chair for the 2024 International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose, and an elected member of the Administrative Committee of the IEEE Sensors Council.
